How were Essential Oils Historically Made?
In Biblical days, essential oils were made through steam distillation in stills made of stone or pottery. The process of steam distillation to make essential oils is known to have been used by the Babyonians, Chinese, East Indians, Egyptians and Sumerians at least as far back as 3500 BC. As far as can be determined, cedarwood, frankincense and myrrh have been steam distilled since antiquity.
Traditionally, essential oils were mixed in with olive oil as the carrier oil. Hence it is understood that Biblical references to anointing with olive oil would infer the use of essential oils in the anointing. The process of choosing a particular essential oil for anointing, would depend on what the purpose of the anointing was. This can be further understood when we discover more about their use in Bible times.
